Perth Phoenix Senior Women had a very successful 2008/2009 season, winning the basketballtayside and fife league and the Blitz Tournament.

Claire Watson gained the accolade of the side’s top scorer - with 18.5 points per game (ppg) - and a level of consistency that was appreciated by her team mates.  Four other Phoenix players averaged over 7.0ppg, with the team as a whole hitting an average of 53.3 ppg.

Captain Jo Trodden (9.4ppg) was very much the on court inspiration in defence, taking numerous rebounds in each game she played.  Perth only conceded more than 60 points on two occasions throughout the year, and the hard work of the whole team restricted their opponents to an average ‘points against’ total of just 43.7ppg.

Blitz Tournament Success

The Perth Phoenix Women made their intentions clear early on against Dundee University with a significant lead before being pegged back and eventually holding on for a one point victory. The same pattern was evident against Dunfermline Steel with the same eventual difference in the score-line. Coach Tim Watson ensured, during these encounters, that all nine of his squad on the day played significant minutes with everyone contributing at both ends of the court. Against long time rivals Dundee Sharks, Phoenix built up a healthy lead with a series of fast break points earned off of turnovers. The Phoenix ladies never looked like relinquishing this lead whilst running out as winners of the match and the group.
In the top of group final game, the Perth met the same stiff opposition in Dundee University they had endured earlier in the day. On this occasion there was to be no repeat of the laissez faire approach and after taking control, Phoenix ensured that they maintained a healthy margin which Dundee could do little to overcome.

In addition to picking up the Blitz trophy, the Perth ladies were also presented with their recently acquired Tayside and Fife Women’s League trophy.
